With tightening regulations on control of personal exposure to diesel engine exhaust emissions (DEEE) in the workplace, we carry out the following real-time procedures:​

1. PERSONAL DPM exposure analysis​

This is a device worn by the user that continuously measures the content of carbon particulates (soot) from diesel exhaust gases in the air being breathed in.​

2. AREA DPM concentration analysis​

This is a device in a static position that continuously measures the content of carbon particulates (soot) from diesel exhaust gases in the general body of air.​

3. TAILPIPE DPM and gases concentration analysis​

We use two devices to take measurements directly from the engine tailpipe​

1. One that measures the carbon particulate (soot) - this is an actual particle count which is more accurate than a standard smokemeter which assesses the soot content from the overall opacity of a sample.​
2. Another that measures the combustion gases emitted.​

From this we produce a detailed report highlighting the limits and risks of exposure, giving practical guidance on control measures and best practice in DEEE management

Five categories of aerosols can be reported on​

TSP = Total suspended particles​

PM10 = Inhalable dust - everything up to 10 micron in size​

PM4 - Respirable dust - everything up to 4 micron in size​

PM2.5 - Respirable dust - everything up to 2.5 micron in size​

PM1 - Respirable dust - everything up to 1 micron in size​

Our real-time monitoring procedure for particulates, including respirable crystalline silica, analyses:​

1. PERSONAL respirable dust exposure analysis​

This is a device worn by the user that continuously measures the content of general aerosols in the air being breathed in.​

1. AREA total dust concentration analysis​

This is a device in a static position that continuously measures the content of general aerosols in the general body of air.​

1. PERIMETER total dust concentration analysis​

This involves a series of devices positioned at a boundary to monitor the general aerosols levels leaving site.​

Dust reports can also be analysed by particle size groups showing the frequency of specific dust sizes. More in-depth analysis can be undertaken in our own laboratory.

We use personal and area gas detectors for monitoring concentrations of a range of standard gases.​

Our monitors use a connected network for managing worker safety, even underground and in the most remote settings, allowing for sharing of real-time gas readings, man-down and panic alarms, keeping the whole team informed the whole time.

Our noise monitoring service includes three types of noise measurement​

1. PERSONAL using dosimeters with real-time text and graphical display, data storage, 1/1 octave banding and audio recording​
2. AREA using Class 1 sound level meters with both 1/1 and 1/3 octave band analysis and audio recording​
3. ENVIRONMENTAL using Class 1 sound level meters with both 1/1 and 1/3 octave band analysis​

Our vibration service includes two types of vibration measurement​

1. HAND ARM VIBRATION, using dosimeters with real-time text and graphical display, data storage, 1/1 octave banding and audio recording​
2. WHOLE BODY VIBRATION, using dosimeter pads with real-time text and graphical display, data storage, 1/1 octave banding and audio recording​

Any form of mechanical extraction system that is used to remove airborne contaminants at source is classified as local exhaust ventilation (LEV) under COSHH Regulation 7 and is therefore subject to a regular thorough examination and testing (TExT). This applies to a small vacuum cleaner used as a dust extractor for a power tool just as much as it does to a large bespoke ventilation system serving a workshop or factory. The maximum period between tests is 14 months unless otherwise specified in Schedule 4 of Regulation 9.

Our ventilation engineers are P601 certified to carry out Regulation 9 thorough examination and testing in assessing compliance with the requirements of the regulatory standards.
