Real sites are never constant. Headcount, tasks and weather change daily, so dust control must flex without losing effectiveness. A resilient design uses modular elements and the three-layer framework to maintain protection when conditions shift.
Build in scalability from the start
Select modular systems so you can add or reposition capture points and air control without rewiring the method statement. Use quick-connect ducting, spare LEV drops and mobile scrubbers to scale capacity. Specify airflow targets under load and plan for filter loading so performance remains stable through the shift.
Apply the three-layer model
- Capture at source: integrate tool-mounted extraction, shrouds and enclosure options. Slow cutting speeds where feasible to reduce generation.
- Control in the air: use air scrubbers or negative air machines sized to the real room volume and task rate. For fine or carcinogenic dusts, include an H14 filter stage in the control layer.
- Capture on surfaces: standardise H-class vacuum clean-down, avoiding sweeping and compressed air.
Design for changeover and maintenance
Place equipment so filters can be changed without stopping the job. Keep spare hoses and seals, and schedule quick checks for pressure drops or alarm states. Short, frequent maintenance prevents sudden collapses in airflow.
Monitor and adjust
Use a particulate monitor to set baselines and spot drift. When readings rise, add a scrubber, extend ducting or move source capture closer. Keep a simple log so shifts can repeat what works.
Where appropriate, combine LEV and portable scrubbers from the same ecosystem for easier redeployment; for example, pairing LEV hoods with MAXVAC Dustblocker units can simplify moves as site conditions change.
Practical takeaways
- Choose modular elements you can scale and reposition quickly.
- Specify airflow under load and plan for filter loading.
- Use H14 in the air control layer for fine or carcinogenic dusts.
- Monitor PM and adjust capture, control and housekeeping based on trends.
Design for variability and your controls will hold their performance when conditions shift, not just on the day of commissioning.
