Welding bays work best when extraction is designed in, not bolted on. Plan the layout so welders can position work freely while capture remains effective, easy to adjust and simple to maintain.

Start with the process, not the fan

  • List common joints, positions and workpiece sizes. This drives hood type, arm reach and parking positions.
  • Place fixtures so the plume can travel towards the hood, not the exit.
  • Allow clear sight lines and space for lifting, turning and tacking.

Choose capture that matches the work

  • Use arms or backdraft benches for repeat tasks; consider on‑torch extraction for long or awkward runs.
  • Keep duct routes short with gentle bends to protect under‑load airflow.
  • Provide stable mounting so welders can reposition hoods with one hand.

Ducting, make‑up air and room effects

  • Balance extract with clean make‑up air introduced low and calmly so it feeds the hood.
  • Size ducting to keep velocities in a sensible range and to minimise noise and pressure drop.
  • Avoid exhausts that create cross‑draughts across open bays or walkways.

Build maintainability in

  • Locate filters and bins where they can be serviced without dismantling the bay.
  • Use simple pre-use checks: hood position, airflow indicator, visible damage.
  • Set a filter schedule and log. Train supervisors to spot under‑performance early.

Commissioning and verification

  • Prove capture at the hood with smoke and adjust positions before sign‑off.
  • Record airflow under load; don’t rely on free‑air figures.
  • Introduce periodic particulate monitoring to confirm day‑to‑day control.

Equipment choice follows the layout, not the other way round. For flexible bays, mobile weld fume extractors can cover overflow or large fabrications, while well-sized ducting helps fixed stations stay quiet and effective. With capture-first design, welders keep freedom of movement and exposure stays controlled.
