Shops rarely weld in isolation. Grinding, cutting, and housekeeping all affect air quality. Integrate welding extraction with wider dust control so systems complement rather than fight each other.

Design around zones

Create a welding zone with local exhaust on each station and a background air-change plan. Keep make-up air behind the operator so fume travels away from the breathing zone and into the hood, not across the bay.

Balance flows to avoid cross-draughts

Large general extract can overwhelm capture hoods. Start with source capture on the weld, then add modest room scrubbing to reduce haze. Where enclosure is possible, use light negative pressure to contain fume without stealing arc shielding.

Filtration and maintenance

Use filter classes appropriate to fine particulate; H14 is recommended for carcinogenic or ultrafine aerosols. Check airflow under load and schedule prefilter changes so welding hoods maintain capture without boosting fans unnecessarily.

Coordinating with grinding and clean-up

Set grinding booths or downdraft tables to prevent sparks from entering welding intakes. For general airborne control, equipment such as MAXVAC Dustblockers can scrub the room air to keep background particulate low while the weld stations manage the plume.

Controls that play well together

Keep duct runs short at the stations, minimise sharp bends, and sequence start-up so welding capture comes on first. Where portability is needed, WFE can be deployed at the bench while the central system looks after the space.

  • Zone the workspace; bring clean air from behind the welder.
  • Prioritise source capture, then add gentle room scrubbing.
  • Use H14 filtration for ultrafine and carcinogenic fume.
  • Service prefilters early to maintain under-load performance.
  • Separate grinding airflow to avoid spark carry-over.

Integrated control reduces exposure, noise, and energy use—one plan, layered defences, cleaner work.
