Short welds, frequent moves, and quick setups make fume control easy to skip. The solution is a task-based approach that sets minimum controls you can deploy in minutes and repeat all day.

Pre-stage for speed

Keep a compact hood and flexible arm ready on a mobile base. Lay power and extraction cables together so one move relocates both. Coil hoses to the next position before finishing the current run.

Capture at source, then top up the room

Pull the nozzle across the rising plume with the inlet just off the arc. For bays or corners that trap haze, add a small air scrubber with H14 filtration to keep background levels down between brief welds. Portable WFE units are ideal where you need fast, repeatable control without fixed ducting.

Make adjustment foolproof

Fit easy-grip joints on extraction arms and mark common positions on benches. Use magnets or quick clamps for consistent hood placement. A 5-second smoke test before you start is often enough to confirm direction and pull.

Keep performance under load

Empty bins and change prefilters before the shift. Check the difference in suction with a simple tissue test; if it barely holds, the filter is loaded. Record quick checks on a whiteboard so the next operator knows the state of play.

When mobility is essential

On ladders or in plant rooms, use the lightest practical extraction and back it up with suitable RPE under COSHH. Keep cables tidy to avoid snags and position the hood so fume is drawn away from the face on first strike.

  • Pre-stage extraction and power to cut setup time.
  • Source capture first; add H14 room scrubbing if haze lingers.
  • Use quick clamps and marks for repeatable hood placement.
  • Check suction under load; change prefilters early.
  • Back up with appropriate RPE when access limits extraction.

Intermittent tasks still need consistent controls—make them quick, visible, and easy to repeat.
