If you can see a dust cloud, you are already losing control. Visible dust indicates high particle concentrations and a high risk that respirable fractions are present, even if those finer particles are invisible. Treat it as an immediate signal to stop and fix controls.

Why it matters

RCS has a WEL of 0.1 mg/m³, far below what the eye can detect. Clouds suggest source capture is failing, air changes are insufficient, or housekeeping is re-suspending settled dust.

Immediate actions on site

  • Pause the task. Check on-tool extraction is fitted, powered and sealed, or switch to water suppression.
  • Add or reposition an air scrubber; if possible, create negative pressure to protect adjacent areas.
  • Stop sweeping. Vacuum with H-Class filtration and damp-wipe surfaces.
  • Check RPE is worn correctly while controls are restored.

Apply the three-layer framework: capture at source first, then stabilise the air, then clean surfaces. Air filtration units and H-Class vacuums from ranges like MAXVAC can support this sequence when set up and maintained correctly.

Prove the fix

Do a quick particulate check during a representative cut or grind. Record mg/m³, controls in place and a photo of the setup. If dust remains visible, escalate: redesign the process, slow the cut, change the tool or relocate the task outdoors with control.

  • Visible dust means controls are failing—act immediately.
  • Start at the source, then air, then surfaces; avoid sweeping.
  • Verify with a spot measurement and record the change.
  • Review the method to prevent recurrence.

Treat dust clouds as a trigger, not a talking point. Fast, practical steps protect health and demonstrate due diligence.
