Good welds rely on what you can see. Fume clouds obscure the puddle, distort the arc, and fog visors. Control the plume and you improve bead placement, travel speed consistency, and inspection quality, while reducing rework.

Position extraction to clear the line of sight

Bring the hood or nozzle close enough to intercept the rising plume without disturbing the shielding gas. Aim across the plume, not directly into the arc. Keep the capture point slightly above and to the side so hot gases are drawn away from the operator’s view window.

Stabilise airflow and lighting

Minimise cross-draughts from doors or fans that push fume back into the line of sight. Use task lighting behind or above the extractor inlet to illuminate the puddle once the plume is thinned. Check airflow under load rather than free-air figures; blocked or dirty filters reduce capture and allow haze to build.

Protect the helmet and lenses

Condensed fume coats lenses and auto-darkening sensors, dulling contrast. Clean lenses daily and store helmets away from airborne fume. A small change in clarity can be the difference between tracking the joint and drifting off line.

Plan the workflow

Set up extraction before striking the arc. Tack from the cleanest air side first, then progress with the hood moved ahead of the weld path. Where space is tight, consider on-torch or compact solutions; weld fume extractors can provide close-range capture that keeps the puddle visible.

Verify and adjust

Use a simple smoke test or a particulate meter to confirm the plume is being pulled away from your sightline. If welding in bays, add an air scrubber with H14 filtration to reduce background haze, improving visual conditions between passes.

• Control draughts; measure airflow under load after filter changes.
