Brick and block cutting releases respirable crystalline silica (RCS), a cause of silicosis, COPD and lung cancer. The UK WEL for RCS is 0.1 mg/m³ (8‑hr TWA). Effective control requires choices at the method, tool and housekeeping levels.

Choose low-dust methods first

Consider off-site cutting, block splitters, or redesigning details to reduce cuts. Plan cuts outdoors, upwind of others, and away from air intakes. Mark and measure to minimise rework.

Capture at source

Use water suppression to keep dust from becoming airborne. Fit a tight, purpose-made shroud on grinders; for example, pairing a grinder with an AGS-125 Shroud helps connect to an industrial vacuum effectively. Select M-Class vacuums as a minimum for silica dust and check airflow under load with a gauge or indicator.

Right tool, right task

For masonry removal and heritage work, tools like an Allsaw paired with extraction can reduce dust escape compared to open grinding. Use slower feed rates and sharp blades to limit release. Keep cables and hoses tidy to maintain a safe stance.

RPE, housekeeping and verification

Provide RPE (usually P3) and ensure face-fit testing; JSP Infinity Masks can be used where a suitable model is selected and fit-tested. Avoid sweeping and compressed air; vacuum surfaces and clothing with high-efficiency filtration then damp-wipe. Where work is indoors, add an air scrubber with H13–H14 filtration to control background dust and set up simple containment.

Practical takeaways

  • Plan low-dust methods, work outdoors where possible, and avoid rework.
  • Use water suppression and tight shrouds connected to M/H-Class vacuums.
  • Fit-test P3 RPE and manage hoses for safe, steady cutting.
  • Vacuum-only housekeeping; avoid sweeping and blow-down.
  • Monitor dust levels and log controls under COSHH.

Prioritising source capture, background air control and disciplined housekeeping keeps exposures well-managed and supports productivity on site.
