Clogged filters are the fastest way to lose dust control. As filters load, airflow under load drops, pickup suffers, and airborne dust rises. Preventing and managing clogging is maintenance, but it is also exposure control.

Why filters clog

  • Fine loading: very small particles block pores (blinding), especially with dry sanding and cutting.
  • Humidity and sticky dusts: gypsum, adhesives, or damp fines form cakes that resist cleaning.
  • Wrong media or no pre-separation: heavy debris hits the HEPA too soon and overwhelms it.

How to manage filter loading

  • Pre-separate: use a cyclone or drum pre-separator for bulk dust to protect the main filter.
  • Use auto-clean wisely: pulse or reverse-air systems restore airflow; pause if visible breakthrough occurs.
  • Right bags and seals: run with the correct liners and check gaskets; leaks cause bypass and internal dusting.
  • Change at the right time: go by performance and differential pressure (Pa), not just calendar time.

Care without damage

  • Do not bang or brush HEPA elements; you can tear fibres and ruin efficiency. Replace if compromised.
  • Let fine dust settle before opening the machine; cap hose ports and mist the work area if needed.
  • Double-bag removed filters and label the waste according to your RAMS.

Verification and records

Track airflow or static pressure trends and keep a simple log. If capture worsens, inspect for tears, poor seating, or saturated media. A quick check with a particulate monitor after maintenance confirms improvements.

Using pre-separators and routinely cleaned primary filters keeps HEPA stages effective for longer; many teams place a cyclone ahead of site extractors, including those paired with MAXVAC units, to maintain steady airflow throughout the shift.

Practical takeaways

  • Prevent clogging with pre-separation and the right bags.
  • Use auto-clean, but watch for breakthrough; replace damaged media.
  • Measure performance under load and log changes.
  • Handle and dispose of filters as contaminated waste.

Look after filters and they will look after your exposure limits, productivity, and reputation.
