Dust Knowledge Hub

Mixed-use sites combine different occupancies, ventilation systems and sensitivities. Dust and fume control must protect non-work areas while keeping the job moving. The key is pressure, pathways and proof.

Plan pressure from the start

Define a work zone and create negative pressure to adjacent spaces using modular air control systems. Keep make-up air clean and predictable by sealing leaks and using controlled inlets. Verify direction with a simple tissue test at doors and record pressure readings periodically.

Control pathways, not just points

Dust escapes via lift shafts, risers and stairwells. Seal penetrations, use antechambers at entries, and keep doors self-closing. Place air scrubbers to draw air away from sensitive uses such as retail or residential corridors, then duct discharge to safe areas.

Right filtration for the risk

Match filter class to the hazard: M-Class for general nuisance and H13/H14 where respirable or carcinogenic dusts are present. Track airflow under load and change filters based on pressure rise, not calendar time. Avoid over-ducting; short, straight runs maintain performance and reduce energy use.

Schedule and communicate

Programme high-dust tasks when occupancy is lowest and coordinate with building management. Brief trades on access routes and housekeeping rules: no sweeping, H-Class vacuum only, and bag-and-seal waste at source. Use a particulate monitor to evidence conditions against internal limits and the HSE context.

Practical takeaways

  • Maintain negative pressure and verify direction into the work zone.
  • Seal risers and create antechambers to block escape routes.
  • Select filtration by risk and monitor airflow under load.
  • Time dusty tasks for low occupancy and evidence air quality with PM data.

A modular approach lets you resize, re-route and maintain control as the project moves between floors or phases without losing protection to occupied areas.
