Masonry grinding and raking release high levels of respirable crystalline silica (RCS). To keep work productive and compliant with COSHH and HSE expectations, apply layered controls that prevent dust escape, limit background build-up, and avoid re-agitation.

1) Capture at source

Use task-appropriate shrouds that fully enclose the wheel and maintain a continuous seal. Pair with an industrial vacuum capable of maintaining airflow under load. For higher-risk work, use H-Class with HEPA final filtration (H13/H14). Adjust cut depth and speed to match capture capacity; slower passes often reduce total time by preventing re-cuts and clean-up.

Where water suppression is suitable, use minimal flow to dampen dust without creating slurry hazards. Keep electrics safe and cords clear.

2) Capture in the air

In enclosed areas, add an air scrubber or negative air machine to reduce ambient particulate and direct airflow out of the work zone. A MAXVAC negative air unit can support containment rooms by maintaining directional flow while on-tool extraction does the primary control.

3) Capture on surfaces

Do not sweep or use compressed air. Use an industrial vacuum with proper filtration for clean-down at breaks and end of shift. Bag waste carefully and avoid shaking filters or bags in the work area.

Planning and verification

Isolate the work zone, seal obvious leakage paths, and brief the team. Wear RPE (FFP3 or equivalent) as a backup. Check performance visually and, where possible, use a particulate monitor to spot peaks; if levels rise, slow the feed, improve sealing, or boost extraction.

Practical takeaways

  • Tool-mounted shroud plus appropriate vacuum is non-negotiable.
  • Use room control in enclosed spaces to protect others.
  • Vacuum-only housekeeping prevents re-suspension.
  • Adjust the method if you see plumes or settled dust building up.

With layered controls in place, masonry grinding and raking can be both efficient and within expected exposure limits.
