A dependable routine keeps exposures down, productivity up, and inspections straightforward. This daily checklist focuses on prevention, control, and housekeeping for typical construction tasks.
Start of shift: capture at source
- Confirm the day’s dust-generating tasks and specify controls in the briefing.
- Fit correct blades/bits and use water suppression where applicable.
- Check on-tool extraction shrouds and hose connections for damage and seal.
- Verify vacuum class (M/H) matches the dust risk and that a bag is installed.
Air control and airflow under load
- Inspect air scrubbers/LEV for intact ducting and seals; set to exhaust or recirculate as planned.
- Start with clean pre-filters; keep spares. Log pressure/airflow indicators.
- Target stable flow under load, not free-air figures; adjust for hose length and tool demand.
Housekeeping during the day
- Never dry sweep or use compressed air. Vacuum with M/H-class units only.
- Wipe horizontal surfaces prone to fall-out; minimise handling to avoid re-agitation.
- Change bags at two-thirds capacity; seal immediately.
RPE and welfare
- Issue task-appropriate RPE and check fit/seal; replace filters as scheduled.
- Provide a clean area for breaks away from dusty zones.
Monitoring and records
- Take spot PM readings (PM2.5/PM10) at the start, mid-shift, and after changes to controls.
- Note any exceedances and actions taken in the site log and COSHH assessments.
End of shift close-down
- Vacuum floors and ledges; bag and seal waste. Leave surfaces damp-wiped if needed.
- Inspect filters for loading; replace pre-filters ready for the next shift.
- Secure equipment and consumables so controls start promptly tomorrow.
Practical takeaways
- Plan controls in the briefing and verify airflow under load.
- Use sealed bagging and avoid sweeping.
- Measure, record, and adjust based on PM readings.
Small, consistent actions each day prevent build-up, control exposure, and keep work moving without dust-related stoppages.
