Grinding and raking generate fine airborne particulate, including respirable crystalline silica (RCS). The HSE Workplace Exposure Limit for RCS is 0.1 mg/m³ (8-hr TWA), which is easy to exceed without on-tool capture. Good dust extraction protects lungs, improves visibility, and cuts rework and clean-up time.

Plan the control

Use the three-layer approach: capture at source with a shroud, control in the air with an air scrubber or negative air unit where rooms are enclosed, and finish with vacuum-based housekeeping. RPE such as FFP3 may still be needed as a backup under COSHH.

Set it up step by step

  • Choose a task-appropriate shroud that fully encloses the cutting or grinding zone.
  • Connect an anti-static hose firmly to prevent leaks; keep it short and avoid tight bends.
  • Use an industrial vacuum with appropriate filter class (M or H). For fine or carcinogenic dusts, specify HEPA final filtration (H13/H14). Focus on airflow under load, not free-air figures.
  • Start the extractor before the grinder, seat the shroud flat, and feed steadily. If plumes appear, slow the pass, improve the seal, or upgrade extraction.

Room control and housekeeping

In small or occupied spaces, add an air scrubber or a negative air machine to reduce background particulate and direct airflow away from neighbours. For example, a MAXVAC air scrubber can help manage airborne dust while on-tool capture does the heavy lifting. Avoid sweeping or compressed air; use an industrial vacuum for clean-down.

Proving it works

Check surfaces for settled dust, watch for visible escape, and, where available, use a particulate monitor to spot peaks during cutting. If readings climb, reduce cut depth or speed, improve sealing, or increase extraction capacity.

Quick checklist

  • Shroud sealed and suited to the task
  • Anti-static hose, minimal bends
  • Vacuum class and airflow under load confirmed
  • Supplementary room control where needed
  • No sweeping; vacuum-only clean-up

When set up properly, on-tool extraction drastically reduces airborne dust, supports compliance, and keeps productivity high.
