Dust Knowledge Hub

Phase-to-phase cleaning prevents dust migration, protects finishes and reduces rework. A clear routine keeps teams productive and supports COSHH duties.

Set up zones and airflow control

Before work starts, define clean, transition and dirty zones. Use barriers and pressure management so air moves from clean to dirty areas, not the reverse. Where cutting or sanding takes place, deploy LEV at source and consider an air scrubber or negative air machine to keep airborne particulate down while tasks run.

Between-phase routine

1) Stop and contain

Down tools, let LEV or air scrubbers run for a few minutes to clear suspended dust. Cap or bag waste chutes and ducts to stop backflow.

2) Surface capture

Vacuum all workfaces, edges and floors with industrial vacuums using appropriate filtration (H14 where respirable carcinogens are present). Avoid sweeping and compressed air. Wipe critical surfaces damp to lift residues.

3) Air capture

Run air filtration until PM readings stabilise. Check airflow under load and clean or change prefilters if performance drops.

4) Verify and handover

Spot-check with a particulate meter if available, focusing on doorways and returns. Record issues, then sign the area to the next trade with a brief note of remaining controls.

Waste handling and documentation

Bag at source, seal and label. Store waste away from air returns and walkways. Keep a short log: what was cleaned, equipment used, filter changes, and any exceedances. This supports HSE expectations and helps future planning.

Practical takeaways

  • Define zones and maintain airflow from clean to dirty.
  • Use LEV at source and run air filtration during and after dusty tasks.
  • Vacuum, do not sweep; apply H14 where respirable carcinogens are present.
  • Verify with a quick PM check and record filter maintenance.
  • Seal, label and segregate waste to prevent recontamination.

Short, consistent routines between phases keep dust under control, protect finishes and keep the programme on time.
