A good plan turns dust control from reactive clean-ups into predictable performance. Use a simple structure that defines risks, applies controls, assigns duties and proves they work.

1) Identify tasks and risks

List activities that generate dust: cutting, chasing, sanding, mixing, sweeping. Note materials (concrete, brick, hardwoods, plaster) and relevant WELs. Assume RCS is present when working concrete or masonry.

2) Apply the three-layer framework

Capture at source

  • Specify water suppression or tool-mounted extraction for each task.
  • Choose M/H-Class extractors sized for the tool; confirm airflow under load.
  • Design fixtures and jigs to reduce aggressive cutting where possible.

Capture in the air

  • Use air scrubbers or negative air machines to manage background dust, with H13/H14 final filtration for fine fractions.
  • Plan airflow direction to protect adjacent trades and create clean routes.

Capture on surfaces

  • Ban sweeping and compressed air. Use H-Class industrial vacuums and damp-wipe.
  • Set clean-down points and frequency per task.

Air scrubbers and extractors from ranges such as MAXVAC can be integrated where continuous-duty filtration and robust housings are needed.

3) Roles, checks and maintenance

Assign a responsible person for daily inspection of seals, filters and bin levels; schedule weekly airflow tests and monthly internal inspections. Keep spares and gaskets. Book LEV examination to meet COSHH requirements.

4) Monitoring and triggers

Use a particulate monitor for spot checks during representative tasks. Record mg/m³ values, location and controls in use. Set stop-work triggers for visible dust or readings above targets, and require immediate review.

5) Document and brief

Write short method sheets, include PPE/RPE details, and brief workers before starting. Capture sign-offs and keep records with the COSHH assessment.

  • Map tasks, materials and WELs.
  • Specify controls by the three-layer model.
  • Test airflow under load; maintain and log.
  • Monitor, set triggers, and brief the team.

With this plan, controls are chosen on purpose and proven in use, not left to chance.
