Chronic exposure to silica dust, wood dust and welding fume drives COPD, asthma and cancer risk. The objective is simple: reduce lifetime dose. That requires layered controls and routine verification, not occasional clean-ups.

Plan by task and dust type

Identify materials and processes generating RCS, hardwood dust or fine particulates (PM2.5/PM1). Build controls into RAMS before work starts. Use COSHH assessments to set trigger points for monitoring and RPE.

Layer 1: capture at source

Fit on-tool shrouds to grinders and saws and connect to suitable industrial vacuums. Use water suppression for cutting and drilling where it will not damage finishes. Select equipment for airflow under load, not free-air figures, and keep seals and hoses in good condition.

Layer 2: capture in the air

Where dust becomes airborne, use air scrubbers or negative air setups to control migration. Choose high-efficiency filtration; H14 is advised for respirable or carcinogenic dusts. Mobile units, such as MAXVAC Dustblockers, can maintain cleaner air in rooms and corridors and help establish directional airflow.

Layer 3: capture on surfaces

Adopt vacuum-only housekeeping. Use H-Class machines for high-hazard dusts and avoid sweeping or compressed air that re-aerosolises particulate. Empty bags and bins carefully and seal waste.

Verify and support health

Check PM levels during peak tasks with a particulate monitor and log results against your control plan. For RCS, keep exposure well below the HSE WEL of 0.1 mg/m³. Implement appropriate health surveillance and provide PPE once engineering and administrative controls are in place; fit-test tight-fitting RPE and maintain it properly.

Practical takeaways

  • Specify controls by task and dust type in RAMS.
  • Use on-tool extraction and water to prevent dust escape.
  • Deploy H14-filtered air scrubbers to manage airborne particulate.
  • Vacuum-only cleaning; service filters and check seals.
  • Monitor, record and adjust; support with fit-tested PPE where needed.

Long-term protection is a daily habit. Layered controls, routine checks and competent upkeep keep exposure low across a career.
