Budget extractors often look capable on paper but stumble during real COSHH assessments. Failures usually come down to under-load airflow, poor sealing, the wrong filter class, and maintenance design that cannot cope with continuous duty.
Where they typically fail
- Free-air figures only. Once connected to a tool and hose, airflow collapses and capture velocity drops below what the task needs.
- Leaky chassis and cuffs. Air bypasses the filter, so even a good cartridge cannot deliver H-class performance.
- Incorrect filtration. M-class machines used for high-hazard dusts, or “HEPA-like” filters with no EN 1822 rating.
- No effective filter cleaning. Fines load quickly; resistance rises, and performance tails off mid-shift.
- Poor antistatic control. Without a conductive path, nuisance shocks and dust cling make the system ineffective and unpleasant to use.
Simple checks before you buy or deploy
- Ask for under-load airflow through a representative hose length and tool shroud. If it is not provided, test it.
- Inspect seals and build. Look for continuous gaskets, solid latches, and tight tool cuffs; do a smoke or talc test for bypass.
- Verify filter class. For respirable risks, specify H-class and HEPA H13/H14; keep documentation with the kit.
- Assess cleaning method. Automatic pulse or vibration that works under dust load prolongs performance between bag changes.
- Check spares and service. Prefilters, bags, and parts must be readily available or the unit will be run clogged.
On-site practices that keep you compliant
- Shorten hoses, minimise bends, and match diameters to the tool to preserve capture velocity.
- Set change-out triggers using differential pressure rather than waiting for visible dust.
- Combine source capture with air scrubbers and H-class housekeeping so failures in one layer do not expose workers.
Compliance is about performance where the work happens. Choose equipment that holds airflow under resistance, seals properly, and has the right filtration, then operate it with simple, disciplined checks.
